About the Cemetery

Bean Cemetery is a small community cemetery located on the southeast side of Kirbyville, Texas, just off Highway 82 and across the road from the larger Kirbyville City Cemetery.

The grounds are simple and peaceful, with open sky, shade trees, and markers that reflect generations of local families who have called Jasper County home.

Many burials here are connected to long-standing family names in the area, and the cemetery continues to be a place of remembrance and reflection for the community.

“Free Burial Ground Courtesy of Dr. B. F. Bean”

A stone near the entrance carries this inscription, reflecting the original vision of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Bean, a local doctor and state legislator who believed that no one should have to pay for a final resting place.

History & Legacy

Bean Cemetery takes its name from Dr. B. F. Bean (Benjamin Franklin Bean), a physician who practiced in Jasper County for decades and also served in the Texas Legislature around the turn of the 20th century.

Dr. Bean donated the land as a free burial ground for the people of Kirbyville, a commitment that is still remembered by the marker bearing his name. The cemetery has been in use since the early 1900s and includes many members of the extended Bean family as well as friends and neighbors from across the area.

Today, Bean Cemetery stands alongside Kirbyville City Cemetery as part of the town’s historic landscape, representing the generosity of its founder and the enduring ties between local families and this place.
